Christmas .....

What a time of year, party, party, party with no time to stop. Too much beer and too little exercise makes for a tubby athlete unless I'm careful...
I did the Rhos on Sea CC Boxing Day Time Trial yesterday which was a lot of fun, but hurt my lungs like you wouldn't believe!
I'm just getting back to running after around a month out with a calf injury, and I've managed to get back to my long runs in the hills of Snowdonia over the Christmas period and there was SNOW everywhere, great!
I've had the Carneddau Triathlon Club Christmas Ride which was great fun, despite the atrocious weather. It also gave me the opportunity to meet a really inspirational guy, Martin, who after undergoing EIGHT sessions of chemotherapy last year is now undertaking EIGHT life affirming challenges this year, to raise money for the Lymphoma Association. Way to go Martin!! Read more here
It's my wifes birthday tomorrow, and to celebrate we're going for food at one of the best Italian Restaurants around, Carlo's in Craig Y Don. Woohoo put away the scales for at least another day!

Don't go chasing waterfalls?

It's the end of the season, and I'm glad. I've had a fantastic year, although towards the end I was running on empty, particularly at Bala. Big shout to Rhian who came second and rocked it! Also my team mate Adey has been burning the nitro this season and is showing some real form. Good work!

So now for a little down time - as in downing tools not feeling down!!

I've had a go at road racing, pure adrenaline, racing in the moment, sweat pain and smiles....beautiful! Race 1 on a closed road circuit and I scraped home in 7th, race 2 The Prestatyn Crit a classic course, I tried to get away a couple of times but kept getting pulled back the sprinting was fierce - not what a triathlete is used to!

I've tried mountain biking........leave tractors to farmers!

I've swam in the lake a few times.....

I've partied hard......

And I've taken the dog on a tour of some local waterfalls in Betws Y Coed & Dyserth......he didn't seem that interested, but he did get to have a good ol' shniff!!!!

It's been a while since I've posted. Since I've had a sucky race down in Porthcawl - I love the race, it's the Welsh Championships and one of the highlights of my season......usually. I simply did not race!! I had a shocker, tired, lethargic, terrible. It put me in a bad place, and the mood has been dark for a few weeks afterwards.....

Which made me think of one of the coolest quotes ever "But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. " Rocky Balboa. I wish I'd thought of this quote earlier instead of sitting around sulking. Bala Standard Distance is coming next week time to put things right....

Home sweet home.....

Racing on my home turf - that's me coming out of the Irish Sea onto Llandudno's Victorian promenade ! The start line is about a mile and a half from home, and this weekend felt pretty strange with not having to drive for 4 odd hours to get to the event.......
I've had a pretty hard block of training , but still set my sights on a top 10 placing at the Llandudno Sea Triathlon.
The sea was choppy which made for a fun swim, then the bike took in 4 laps of the The Great Orme (I could feel the weeks training in my legs!), then the run was a out and back 2.5km loop, four times over (I was running like a donkey except for the last 1km when my legs came back to life - 9km too late!). The support out on the course was awesome!! I just wished I could have backed it up with an awesome performance. Still it was a good day in the office and I managed to grab 9th place.
An amazing venue for a race, I would recommend it to anyone...fantastic.

In the loop.....

Left is Mark Cavendish, I was lucky enough to see him race on Sunday. The guy is great, a winner who says it how it is! He does not get nearly enough credit in the British Press, perhaps it's because he wins!!

For me, it was back in the loop of racing with the Parc Bryn Bach Triathlon, the Welsh Championships. A 2 loop swim, 10 loop bike, 3 loop run, I was dizzy at the end, and truly back in the loop! Not the best of races for me, just one of those days, I aimed for top 5 but got 7th, but hopefully for the rest of the season I'll be getting stronger and stronger.

Time to get back into the loop of training now, some consistency and effort will bring me great race day performance!

8 Mile Crack at the Bala Middle Distance Tri'

PAIN! Bala Middle today. Swim steady, bike good, went into the run around 12th position, lost a couple of places then gained a couple of places as we got to the turn around. I knew that there were a fair few people chasing hard, but I was running steady and strong. Then mile 8...............I cracked like an egg! My head hurt like I'd had a gallon of drink, my legs went to jelly and all I wanted was water, water, water. My pace dropped by 2 minutes per mile and I just held on as well as I could, cursing the people who passed me by. I had a decent finish but bloody hell it hurt!
The wife had a terrible day in the office, leading after the swim and bike, a reccurrence of a run injury hit with a vengeance at mile 2. Not wanting to quit (worried what people might say) she ploughed on, aggravating the injury further and limping home 4th or 5th. Gutted for her.

A good judge of character.....

This dog has only ever peed on one person, but we thought it best to get a warning T shirt...just to be safe. Some people say that animals are an excellent judge of character, but I can understand why the lady involved was so upset......
So the ASBO hound has now been tagged!

A much needed break?

At last some sunshine in beautiful Mallorca! What a great break, the island is lovely and a cyclists paradise. This photo is taken of a side road in Pollenca, have way up an huge flight of steps ( 510 steps to be precise). Which made me think if you are reaching for the top, you may get there but you may not, but by enjoying the journey as you go you will see that there are many other paths and opportunites along the way.

Anyway enough talking gibberish, we got around twenty odd hours training in (swim, bike, run), during the week and then raced the Sprint Triathlon at Harlech the day after we got back. MAN I WAS TIRED!!!!!!! Fun, fun, fun.
Anyway here's to the race season, let's see what she brings!

Bathing Dangerous

Bathing Dangerous? You betcha life it is! I noticed this sign prior to the sea swim in the Tuska Sprint Triathlon, held in Porthcawl, South Wales. It's a great swim you get mashed up at the start, caught in a rip in the middle and spat out at the end! Great fun:-) - A great race though, brilliant course and very well organised, I recommend it to everyone.
Bearing in mind that Bathing is indeed Dangerous, we organised Carneddau Triathlon Club's first club training duathlon the other week, marshalling was as much fun as competing, and no water in sight.

Bring on The Spring

The weather has been COLD this last few weeks and the urge to go searching for the sun and warm weather training has never been so strong.

This coupled with a foot injury I have picked up, has been very poor for motivation! The foot injury, is non to serious ( an inflamed planta fasciia), and luckily I have been using a local physio who seems to be pretty on the ball and is helping things along nicely - thanks North Wales Physio!

Anyway back to the weather, I am British after all, and it is a national preoccupation. The thaw is coming! Milder weather this weekend! That's all I needed to hear, happy days. The accompanying rain and high wind though was an absolute joy to ride through this morning:-) Luckily we had a good bunch of guys and girls out from Carneddau Tri' Club to enjoy the weather, and the ride was actually very enjoyable.
